Spotify for iPad offers on-demand access to more than 17 million songs, leveraging the device's Retina touchscreen to deliver high-definition album art. Users can also search for playlists, users and music from the same view and explore trending playlists.

Spotify first confirmed plans to introduce a native iPad app in late 2011. "The lack of an iPad app has been a gaping hole in Spotify's multiscreen strategy," said Giles Cottle, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media. "While the iPad may not ostensibly be a music consumption device, the sheer amount of time that users spend on it, and the importance it plays as a media consumption device in general, means that any music service worth its salt has to be on it. It's also a key part of Spotify's strategy to get beyond the mobile."

Additional improvements in the new Spotify 0.5.0 for iOS include gapless playback and cross fading, as well as fixes targeting offline synced playlists crashes related to playlist updates.

Spotify is now available in 13 countries and touts more than 10 million active users, including 3 million premium subscribers. The U.S. version offers three flavors: Spotify Free (on-demand, buffer-free access with occasional advertising); Spotify Unlimited (uninterrupted, ad-free access via computer for $4.99 per month); and Spotify Premium (online and offline access across the desktop and mobile for $9.99 per month).

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek likely will offer additional information on the new iPad app during his keynote appearance on Day 2 of next week's CTIA Wireless 2012 conference in New Orleans. FierceMobileContent will be at the show, providing live coverage throughout the week.
