Spotlight: Google Maps is back on iPhone

New app includes turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation

After a disastrous attempt to launch its own maps application, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is bringing Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Maps back to the iPhone with the availability of a new Google Maps iPhone app on the Apple App store. Apple had taken Google Maps off of its iOS 6 operating system launched earlier this year and replaced it with an Apple-developed maps app, which included mislabeled locations, spotty public transportation data, and faulty information that could put users in danger. The debacle led to the firing of Scott Forstall, the head of the iOS 6 development team. The new Google Maps app includes turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, as well as vector-based maps in 2D and 3D views. Read more
