Spotlight: Google ups Motorola Mobility job cuts to over 5,000

New cuts come as unit implements previously announced layoffs

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) said it would cut an additional 1,200 positions at its Motorola Mobility unit, on top of the 4,000 cuts announced last August, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. Motorola Mobility employees were informed of the cuts this week by email. "These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer. It's obviously very hard for the employees concerned, and we are committed to helping them through this difficult transition," a Motorola spokesman told the newspaper. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2011 as a way to break into the handset manufacturing market. However, continuing losses at the unit have forced Google to scale back on its plans for the unit and the unit's workforce. Read more
