Sprint launches Guardian safety app bundles for Android

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is making security a priority with Guardian, an Android-based mobile security app that bundles family safety and device security. The app is available on the company's portfolio of Android smartphones.

Sprint will offer two Guardian app bundles: The Family Safety Bundle and the Mobile Security Bundle. The former includes the Sprint Mobile Controls (which locks handsets during designated times like school hours or family dinners), Sprint Family Locator (which enables parents to identify their child's whereabouts on an interactive map) and Sprint Drive First (which is dedicated to reducing the risks of distracted driving). The Family Safety Bundle is priced at $9.99 per month for up to five lines on the same Sprint account.

Sprint Guardian's Mobile Security Bundle features services from Lookout Mobile Security designed to protect the user's phone from malware, phishing, loss and theft. Users can leverage Lookout software to back up their contacts, call history and photos and restore all personal data when they upgrade to a new phone--the Mobile Security Bundle also features tools for finding lost devices as well as remotely locking and wiping phones to safeguard personal information. The bundle is priced at $4.99 per month, or $49.99 per year, for up to five lines on the same account.

Sprint Guardian bundles are available for download via the Sprint Zone application, which is preloaded on the operator's Android devices. Sprint subscribers may purchase both Guardian bundles for $14.98 per month. According to the carrier, that represents a 73 percent savings over purchasing each application in the two bundles separately.

The Guardian effort recalls the ongoing Sprint ID initiative, first launched in October 2010. Each free Sprint ID pack assembles applications, widgets, ringtones, wallpapers and related mobile content, all tied together under the umbrella of a specific brand or theme. Partners include ESPN, MTV, Yahoo and travel organization AAA.
