Sprint may be readying enterprise femtocell

Sprint--the first operator to launch a consumer femtocell service--may be targeting a femtocell service at the enterprise. It is designed to extend service coverage indoors, especially where signals are otherwise weak or not available. More recently, the Femto Forum, a group dedicated to pushing femtocell specs and positioning the technology, has been touting femtocell use to help mobile operators expand mobile data services and applications.

In an interview with Telephony, Sprint enterprise convergence product marketing manager Steve Coker didn't specifically address whether a product might be rolled out any time soon. However, he did indicate that such an offering would allow Sprint to extend its managed services and fixed-mobile convergence applications to its business subscribers. Sprint could essentially bring its mobile network into the enterprise by creating a cluster of private, base-station access points that would complement office extensions or even replace them.
