Square Enix backpedals, will remove 'Deus Ex: The Fall' jailbreak block

Square Enix, the publisher behind the new Deus Ex: The Fall, said it will eliminate in-game restrictions making the role-playing title essentially unplayable on jailbroken iOS devices.

Square Enix launched Deus Ex: The Fall last week via Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store, integrating a restriction blocking players on jailbroken devices from firing guns. Some gamers expressed outrage at the move, noting that Square Enix did not disclose the limitation on its App Store seller's page, meaning many consumers only discovered the block after purchasing the $6.99 title.

Square Enix said it will restore full functionality to all Deus Ex: The Fall buyers in the near future. "We have not been clear in our communication earlier this week when we launched Deus Ex: The Fall," the company said in a statement supplied to Eurogamer. "We did not state clearly that the game would not support jailbroken devices and so we will be switching this off via an update, so that all the supported iOS devices will be able to play the game in the near future. We feel it's the right thing to do in this situation and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. No customer should be out of pocket when we were not clear from the start, so we'll get the game updated as soon as possible so that everyone who wants to play Deus Ex: The Fall can do regardless of whether their device is jailbroken or not. As soon as this update is live we will communicate this via the Eidos Montreal Community channels."

Jailbreaking is a legal but warranty-voiding process that allows consumers to run unauthorized code, adding software, features and user interface tweaks not supported by the original manufacturer. While jailbroken iOS devices can still access Apple's iTunes and App Store, users may also download unauthorized applications from alternative mobile software storefronts featuring free and premium apps that have run afoul of Apple rules and restrictions. Apple warns against jailbreaking iOS devices, stating that unauthorized modifications could result in system instability, security breaches, abbreviated battery life and other issues.

Deus Ex: The Fall is the fourth title in the Deus Ex series. Set in 2027, the game follows the exploits of Ben Saxon, an augmented former British SAS Mercenary fighting for survival in the face of a global conspiracy. Square Enix has said it will release a version optimized for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android in the weeks ahead.
