ST-NXP, a company that is responsible for shipping over 120 million EDGE chipsets has announced the availability of a new UMA chipset. The 7210 is the first chipset solution that pairs 3G abilities with support for Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA). For those who are not aware, UMA essentially allows cellular mobile calls to be seamlessly switched to and from other wireless networks such as Wi-Fi.  The key benefit here would be that carriers generally stop counting call minutes when a customer is connected via UMA, since they do benefit from offloading traffic from their cellular network. Compatible phones are not numerous at this point, though the BlackBerry 8820 does support UMA.

Other than UMA though, the 7210 chipset also supports a host of other features ranging from the ability to record videos in H.263 and MPEG-4 at 30 frames per second, as well as the ability to process audio formats such as MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA etc.
