Sybase delivers SAP functionality to smartphones

Sybase and SAP have introduced a business process tool that could help alleviate the headaches IT departments face as employees continue to bring their personal devices into the workplace through the back door.

The two companies have introduced a business process tool for iPhones, Windows Mobile devices and Nokia Series 60 phones along with customer relationship management (CRM) software for iPhone and Windows Mobile. An Android version may be introduced later.

The Sybase Mobile Workflow for SAP Business Suite and Sybase Mobile Sales for SAP CRM are designed to enable employees to access business processes on their personal devices without having to log into a VPN. Moreover, the applications operator is in an enterprise "sandbox" that is separated from an employee's personal applications on the phone to ensure security. Once a user has logged into the sandbox, he cannot use personal applications until logging out.

Sybase Mobile Workflow incorporates an interface that resembles an email interface to present tasks that need to completed. The software works with any task or work flow in SAP's Universal Worklist, which includes supply chain, human resources and accounting.
