AT&T denies reports iPhone users can access MMS early
Despite a significant number of reports from iPhone users that the multimedia messaging services (MMS) functionality is now enabled by AT&T on their devices, AT&T maintains it has not enabled MMS ahead of its promised date of Sept. 25.
AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told USA Today that Sept. 25 is still the official date. "We can't comment on what people might be doing" to get MMS now.
The assumption is that jailbroken iPhones are using MMS. PC World reported, however, that MMS capabilities began appearing on some iPhones as early as Saturday. Users in Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas have reported that MMS is working on their devices running the iPhone OS 3.1 with carrier file 5.0. Other consumers, however, have contradicted those reports. Twitter has established a webpage encouraging iPhone users to post their first MMS experiences.
AT&T announced last week that MMS would finally become available on Sept. 25, through a new software release--six months after Apple confirmed its iPhone OS 3.0 software update would support MMS. AT&T said: "The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone's multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from day one."
