AT&T to double its 3G capacity

AT&T is looking to double the network capacity on its 3G network, which currently tops out at 3.6 megabits per second (Mbps). According to AT&T Mobility VP Scott McElroy, the company has already tested the software updates required to bring the downstream speed to 7.2 Mbps in two markets, and plans to extend this to the rest of the network.

This upgrade is, no doubt, needed to accommodate an increasing number of high-speed data devices on the network, such as the 3G iPhone. The next switch will likely be to HSPA+, which will bump speeds up to 21 Mbps. Moving forward, the company has committed to upgrading its online data services to 4G LTE in roughly two years.
