Tiny Wings, Instagram among Apple's top iOS apps for 2011
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced its annual list of top apps, App Store Rewind 2011, compiling its staff's favorite apps for the iPhone and iPad, as well as a list of this year's best selling apps. The list includes the company's top picks across 21 App Store categories.
The top iPhone app was Instagram, a free photo manipulation app that allows users to apply different filters to images. Apple's choice app for the iPad was also a photo editor, Snapseed, which allows users to incorporate a wide variety of effects into images on-the-go. Interestingly, last year's top pick from Apple for iPhone app of the year, Hipstamatic, is also a photo manipulation tool.
The App Store's top five selling paid apps for iPhone were all games, including Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds Seasons, Cut the Rope and Tiny Wings. Surprisingly, none of these games won top iPhone game of the year, with the honor going to Tiny Tower. Apple's runners up for best iPhone game included, Tiny Wings, a top-seller and a former Fierce app of the week, and Touchgrind BMX.
Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Market does not currently publish a list of its favorite apps.
