Tire Rack goes all wireless at new facility
Tire tester and retailer Tire Rack decided to go all wireless at its new corporate headquarters annex in South Bend, Ind., and chose Xirrus to deploy its Wi-Fi system.
The Wi-Fi network can handle bulk file transfers of multiple, 100 megabyte files, and the Xirrus Management System provides network monitoring and management, including integrated rogue detection, location and mitigation, Xirrus explained in a release.
Tire Rack was building a new annex to its corporate headquarters and came to Xirrus and asked, "Can we do this all over wireless?" explained Bruce Miller, vice president of product marketing for Xirrus.
Enterprises like Tire Rack are increasingly turning to Wi-Fi as the primary network infrastructure, driven by BYOD, the consumerization of IT and the growing popularity of cloud applications via mobile computing, explained Miller.
"At the new site, they tried out our products. They used their higher end laptops and were able to transfer mass quantities of data quickly and successfully ... So they decided to deploy our 4000 series arrays at their new facility," Miller told FierceMobileIT.
The arrays are currently using the 802.11n standard, but they have the capability to be upgraded to the higher speed 802.11ac standards by adding modules, Miller noted.
The Xirrus Wi-Fi system covers the new annex building, which is several thousand square feet with three stories, Miller said.
Jean Roberson, chief information officer of Tire Rack, explained, "We particularly see our marketing department benefiting from the installation of Xirrus, which provides the ability for multiple concurrent users to collaborate and share huge digital photos and advertisements with ease."
Roberson related that Tire Rack is considering deploying Xirrus Wi-Fi at its nearby test track facility. "Our test track hosts comprehensive tire tests throughout the year. Xirrus arrays offer the possibility for our testers to stand on the track infield gathering data completely wirelessly, which is a huge benefit for Tire Rack. What's even more exciting is the possibility of wirelessly streaming video feeds from in-car cameras as they traverse our test track--and the Xirrus system can handle it all."
