Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) announced a service with LiveCast Media called 4G Mobile Reporter that will use the operator's high-speed LTE wireless network to send live high-definition video using a laptop and USB modem.

The companies said the service is aimed at media services, government agencies and companies that utilize real-time video streaming capabilities from remote locations, as an alternative to satellite and microwave.

The service can utilize existing camera equipment to deliver video feeds that are embedded with GPS to allow a map display next to the video playback. The service uses LiveCast's Duo software for laptops and a converter device that connects a camera to a laptop if HDMI isn't available. Verizon's 4G LTE modems, the UML290 and the LG VL600, can be used with the system, which is backward compatible with the operator's CDMA-based 3G network.
