Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) updated its 20 Must-Have Apps site, which is designed to help subscribers identify carrier-endorsed applications for devices running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS.

First introduced in February, 20 Must-Have Apps compiles games, social media, entertainment, travel, news, shopping and productivity apps for both Android and iOS. The new batch of recommended apps includes AccuWeather, Crackle, Lemon Wallet, MLB.com At Bat, Moviefone, Slacker Radio, Snapchat and Viggle. All but one of the apps, Verizon's own Android recommendations tool AppLuvr, are optimized for both mobile operating systems; AppLuvr is also the sole holdover from the previous list.

Verizon has pledged to update the 20 Must-Have Apps site at least four times per year.

Verizon first rolled out 20 Must-Have Apps in association with Android App Reviews by Verizon, which spotlights the 25 Top Free and 25 Top Paid Android apps based on their Google Play install rankings over a 30-day period. Verizon staff experts review the apps based on their battery life impact, security and data usage, rating each app on a scale from 1 to 5.

"A low rating means the app might negatively affect your overall experience with your device," Verizon explains. "If you see a low rating on an app you currently use or intend to download, you should review the potential areas of concern to decide if it's an app you want to have on your device." While the majority of apps and games on the list receive top ratings, games like DH Texas Poker and Grand Theft Auto III are penalized for issues with battery and data consumption.

In conjunction with the Android review effort, Verizon Wireless also is flagging high-risk apps that could result in loss of functionality, unexpectedly high data usage, excessive battery drain or privacy exposure. "We work regularly with app developers to help them fix problems with their apps, and apps are removed from this list as soon as the issues are fixed," Verizon states.
