Verizon, VideoSurf team for video discovery app

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and video solutions provider VideoSurf introduced a new application enabling the operator's smartphone users to more efficiently discover, search and identify video content. The VideoSurf app includes visual and audio search tools as well as conventional text-based search queries--users point their smartphone at a television or computer screen, and the solution leverages patented computer vision technology to identify the title and actors as well as related information, even suggesting other videos in the same vein. VideoSurf also enables Verizon subscribers to share their viewing patterns with friends and post video clips directly to Facebook and Twitter.

The VideoSurf app is available as a free download from Verizon's V Cast Apps storefront for Android smartphones. Verizon Wireless adds it will preload VideoSurf on additional 4G LTE smartphones later this year.

VideoSurf serves over 20 million unique users each month, with more than 14 million consumers visiting its website every 30 days. Earlier this year, Verizon Communications' Verizon Ventures investment arm made an unspecified strategic investment in VideoSurf earmarked to help the firm scale and further develop its product portfolio.
