Verizon Wireless expected offer lower-priced smartphone data plan
Verizon Wireless (NASDAQ: VZ) is expected to introduce a less costly data plan for smartphone subscribers next week, providing a $15 per-month option for 150 MB of data in addition to its $30 per-month plan for unlimited data, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal.
The move would follow AT&T's (NYSE: T) change of data plans to a tiered model this past summer, although AT&T has eliminated unlimited data plans. AT&T began offering a $15, 200-megabyte plan this summer in part to attract new smartphone users. AT&T said it has seen swift uptake of the lower-tier plans.
Verizon's new $15 plan will be available on Oct. 28 for new customers and will require a two-year contract. Existing customers have the option of moving to the per-month plan or keeping their current plan. The new plan was earlier reported by technology website Engadget.
Under the new plan, Verizon customers who exceed 150 MB--which amounts to roughly 900 webpages or five hours of streaming music a month--will be charged 10 cents per MB.
