Walmart has acquired Small Society, the developer behind iPhone apps for consumer brands including Starbucks, Whole Foods and Zipcar. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

The Small Society team will join the big-box behemoth's @WalmartLabs digital unit. In an blog entry, Walmart vice president of mobile products Paul Cousineau said Small Society's focus on the mobile user experience and overall customer focus complement Walmart's own mobile commerce ambitions. "We believe that mobile can have an impact on every part of the shopping experience for Walmart customers, whether in-store or online," Cousineau writes.

The Small Society deal follows four months after Walmart scooped up social targeting solutions firm OneRiot, whose platform enables advertisers to reach specific demographic segments via the mobile channel. Walmart said it will leverage OneRiot's technology to enhance its existing social data analysis efforts.
