What will the next phase of OTT messaging look like?

The over-the-top messaging space is growing at an exponential rate and has already surpassed that of traditional SMS. According to a recent report from Infoma Telecoms & Media, by the end of 2013, the volume of OTT messages will be twice that of SMS.

And if you consider the volume of messages that individual OTT services are seeing, none of this is surprising. Take WhatsApp for example: In April, the company reported that it was handling 20 billion messages a day (8 billion inbound and 12 billion outbound).

Given the popularity of OTT apps, the space is already getting crowded with WhatsApp and its competitors like Viber, textPlus and Kik Messenger, which are all fighting for market share in this competitive market. Add Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) Messenger, BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) Messenger and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Hangouts into the mix and you have a market poised for change.
