Why the Japanese hate iPhones

While the Apple iPhone has pretty much taken the world by storm, the phenomenon is not so popular in high-tech Japan. In fact, it is selling so poorly that it's being offered for free by Japanese carrier SoftBank. The 8GB model of the iPhone 3G is being offered for free to customers who are willing to sign up for a two-year contract.

So, why is it the case?

According to Wired, one reason has to do with its pricing, which is considered too high compared to its competitors. Global Crown Research analyst Tero Kuittinen told the magazine, "The pricing has been completely out of whack with market reality."

Another aspect, surprisingly, has to do with technology. Japanese users are extremely into videos and photos, while the iPhone doesn't do video, and is incapable of multimedia text messaging. In fact, built-in TV tuners are a feature enjoyed by many in Japan. And because mobile phones are seen as fashion accessories, Japanese tend to shy away from carrying an iPhone--considered an outdated handset.
