Yahoo poaches former Path, Google+ exec Casey as mobile push continues
Dylan Casey is exiting his post as head of product management at mobile social networking app Path to join Yahoo, All Things D reports.
Casey joined Path in 2011, building and leading the product management team's efforts to develop, prioritize and execute Path's product roadmap, according to his LinkedIn profile. Prior to joining Path, he spent roughly eight years at Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), where he led the Google+ social networking product managers and served on the firm's real-time search staff. Sources say Casey worked closely with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer during their overlapping Google tenures.
It is not yet clear what role Casey will fill at Yahoo, although one source said he could be heading to the company's Platforms divisions, headed by Senior Vice President Jay Rossiter. Neither Path nor Yahoo has responded to requests for comment.
The Casey hire signals Yahoo's latest step to broaden its mobile portfolio and expertise. Since Mayer took the helm close to a year ago, Yahoo has acquired a series of mobile-focused startups, including Summly, Jybe, Alike, Stamped and Astrid, and has made mobile one of four key focus areas of its overhauled platform, alongside search, display and video. As part of its mobile push, Yahoo plans to slash the number of mobile apps it supports from 60 to 75 to a handful of core services.
Last month, Yahoo said it now counts 300 million mobile monthly users, up from 200 million at the end of last year. The company credited the increase to recent overhauls of its mobile and desktop sites but said it is also likely due to users' overall shift from desktop Internet surfing to accessing the Web from their smartphones.
