Yelp for iPhone adds recommendation tools to combat foursquare


Yelp is revamping its local merchant search and discovery application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, rolling out an overhauled Nearby tab presenting customized recommendations influenced by the user's profile as well as contextual factors.

"Our updated Nearby tab now offers suggestions based on your location, previous Yelp check-ins and reviews, and Yelp friends as well as other data like the time of day and even the weather," explains Yelp Product Manager-Search Travis Brooks. "Imagine it's noon and you're hungry for lunch, but don't want the same old ham n' cheese from the corner deli. A quick visit to the Nearby page might bring up a highly rated spot around the corner that is known for their banh mi and has been reviewed by one of your Yelp friends. You might also see a place down the block where a bunch of Yelpers are checked in right now."

According to Brooks, Yelp's mobile apps now generate 45 percent of the firm's total search traffic. He said the company is currently at work to bring the expanded Nearby features to Yelp for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android.

The overhauled Yelp app recalls changes implemented this spring by mobile social networking app foursquare, which launched a new version of its own iOS app emphasizing local search and recommendation features over its signature check-in model. Foursquare 6.0 shifts the Explore feature--which highlights nearby points of interest based on the user's check-in history and their friends' foursquare activity, complete with consumer reviews and merchant offers--from a separate tab at the bottom of the device screen to the top of the navigation bar. An overhauled auto-complete search engine delivers speedier local business and entertainment results than previous foursquare incarnations, and a retooled friends feed now includes recommendations, trending destinations and nearby contacts.
