Opera Mini 4.1 released

Opera Mini 4.1 has just been released. If your phone is equipped with JSR-75, it is now possible to upload and download files. As such, those users who update their blog while on the go will now find that they can upload their photos at the same time. Alternatively, you can download attachments and files onto your phone.

Another new feature is the ability to search for text on a web page. Because Opera also upgraded its servers prior to this release, you now will receive requested web pages up to 50 percent faster. Version 4.1 looks like an increasingly strong contender in the mobile phone space. It is available for download here.

For more on Opera Mini:
- check out the Ars Technica article

CA's new Blackberry management tools

The IT discussion has moved beyond the question of whether you'll use a mobile platform like the Blackberry in your enterprise architecture. Now, the question is how best to manage a fleet of highly-mobile, significantly-limited devices. CA has answered the question with its MDM (Mobile Device Management) tool designed to unify security, data management, device management and more across multiple RIM servers. CA MDM will do automatic device discovery and keep the devices it finds up to date with both system and application code. It's a major step toward making sure that the high-end, multi-network Blackberry remains a valuable part of the total IT infrastructure.

For more on CA MDM:
- Read the new product report at eWeek

The death of traditional security

A wireless network really is different from the traditional cabled network. It's so different that analysts from Forrester are saying that traditional security is no longer up to the job of protecting your network. What will the future bring? The analysts have two terms that they say will define networks (and security) in the future. The first is "deperimeterization", a fancy way of acknowledging that mobile users and remote hotspots have made the traditional concept of a network perimeter meaningless. Next is "desktop virtualization," which means that your users won't run their desktop apps on the mobile device--they'll simply use it as a window into an enterprise desktop hosted on servers inside the corporate network. The result should be a network that doesn't require users to be security experts to keep corporate data safe.

For more on traditional security's death:
- read the analysts' views at eWeek.com

Patch mobile, too

"Patch Tuesday" has become part of the rhythm of life for any I.T. shop running Microsoft software. It's easy to be so caught up in the updates for servers and workstations that you forget about updates for the smallest devices. The early change to Daylight Savings time is a good excuse to include smart phones and PDAs in your regular patch routine--Microsoft, Palm, RIM and others have updated their software to account for the new dates of the time change. The new day for changing clocks happens at the beginning of next week--this week marks a good time for that new update routine.

For more on mobile device updating:
- read the article at Information Week

iAnywhere Solutions has announced the latest addition to its Information Anywhere Suite. The suite, which has offered email synchronization with the major enterprise platforms including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes, now includes instant message transfers with corporate private instant messaging servers. Compatibility is also provided with a number of public instant messaging servers, including Google, but not AOL Instant Messenger.

Security front line shifts again

The word has gotten out: finding corporate networks not protected by multiple layers of firewalls, intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention systems has become far more difficult. Criminals and thieves, having found that the full frontal assault is bearing less fruit, have shifted the focus of their attacks to systems and locations less well-protected. Where's the new front in hacking? Mobile, wireless, and home systems that may be less secure, but that still use a VPN to reach back inside the corporate firewall. If you have users logging in from afar, it's time to make sure that their client hardware is as protected as you want your servers to be.

For more on the newest front:
- read the article at Enterprise IT Planet

Think about security in new ways

Bill Gates is a man who must be heard. When he brings his chief research and strategy officer to the podium to talk about security, attention must be paid. Together the two said that the world of information security has changed, and will continue to change--and that too few IT managers have changed with it. As a meaningful network perimeter has disappeared, it has become ever more important to protect the devices that live within the network--whether they're the servers in the center or the mobile platforms that live beyond the firewall.

For more on the future of security:
- read the article at Government Computer News

Editor's Corner

Building on a Solid Platform
When all you did with a mobile phone was make a voice call, the underlying software really didn't matter to the purchaser. Sure, the contact list and call history might look a little different from phone to phone, but the differences were largely cosmetic. As enterprises begin to see mobile phones as fully-functional portable application platforms, the underlying operating system takes on enormous importance to IT managers. Just as with servers and desktop clients, the operating system will have a huge impact on your ability to deliver the applications the organization demands. This week, the news seemed focused on the platforms as companies explore the current differences and look into the future for coming capabilities. While Microsoft Vista is getting the headlines, the operating systems on your smallest devices may be the platform software that has the greatest impact on you and your organization. If you haven't paid attention to the mobile platform until now, this is your week to start. -Curtis
